In honor of Tom, our first order, and part of my family's military history
At Standard Clothing Company we believe that every service member has a story to tell. Our mission is to help retell those stories by re-purposing the duty worn uniforms of America's finest into subtle patches and accents on quality standard clothing items. This is Tom's story:
PO3 TOM HALL
Branch of Service: United States Navy Reserve
Years of Service: 1971 - 1976
Rank: Petty Officer 3rd Class (PO3)
Military Occupational Specialty (MOS): Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class (AO3)
Training Station: Naval Air Reserve Training, Memphis, TN
Tom spent the early part of his training at the Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) in Memphis, Tennessee. Aviation at this facility, the largest inland naval base in the world, dates back to World War I, when the U.S. Army created Park Field as a training ground for air and ground crews. The navy’s presence began in 1942 when the Park Field site and adjacent areas became first a Naval Reserve Air Base, then a Naval Air Station and finally, in 1949, Naval Air State Memphis. The primary task of the base has remained the same–to train air and ground crews in the operation and maintenance of the Navy’s sea- and land-based aircraft.
Military Occupational Specialty
Tom served as an Aviation Ordnancemen, who specialize in operating and handling aviation ordnance equipment. They are responsible for the maintenance of guns, bombs, torpedoes, rockets, and missiles. Duties include the stowing, issuing, and loading of munitions and small arms. Learn more...
After completing his training, Tom was spent time at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida. On October 15, 1940, Naval Air Station Jacksonville was officially commissioned, and became the first part of the Jacksonville Navy complex that would eventually include NAS Cecil Field and Naval Station Mayport, as well as numerous naval auxiliary air stations and outlying fields in northeast Florida. In 1973, with the assignment of Helicopter Antisubmarine Wing One, the station's primary mission became antisubmarine warfare. Accompanying the wing were five helicopter squadrons which are still based there today. With the new wings and squadrons, opportunities grew for both sea duty and shore duty assignment to NAS Jacksonville. The station's popularity grew and it became one of the most requested duty station for sailors and officers in Naval Aviation throughout the Navy.
Tom spent the majority of his service reporting out of Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, GA. Like most U.S. bases, Dobbins ARB has had to fend off several attempts at closing it, as part of streamlining the country's military and reducing unnecessary spending. Development has steadily encroached upon the base since the war. 1978 OV-1 Mohawk 1989 A-7 Corsair II and 1993 C-130 Hercules plane crashes into residential areas near the base raised questions of safety in having a base in such a densely populated suburban area.
We took a small amount of material from Tommy's uniform, sliced and diced them with high intensity laser beams, then beefed them up with an ultra durable backing! Once those Tommy worn patches are prepped, they're stitched directly onto each shirt with some totally awesome, mega-HUGE embroidery machines.
We've loved making them and know you'll love wearing them. Enjoy!
